BB KALOS EXPERIENCE

The B&B KALOS EXPERIENCE, CIN IT080011B4K45ALHPR- CIR 080011-BEI-00002 opened in 2025 following a major conservative recovery, is developed in a typical tower house in the historic centre of Bova and has four rooms ensuite (shower), equipped with air conditioning / heating, wifi, minifrigor, hairdryer. A beautiful south-facing covered veranda overlooking the Borgo and the Ionian Sea is the ideal place to have breakfast or relax in front of the sometimes smoking, snow-capped Mount Etna and the Pentidattilo cliff. Its location in the historic centre allows one to experience the peace and tranquillity that characterise the ancient Borgo di Bova, cradle of the millenary culture of the Greeks of Calabria.

ROOMS

At the kalòs experience B&B in a room on the ground floor with its own entrance, families with up to 2 children up to 5 years of age (free stay) can be accommodated. Family-friendly services (pram and cot) are provided upon request and included in the price.

The four rooms ensuite of the KALOS EXPERIENCE B&B are essential, but cosy, comfortable and functional, suitable especially for those who during the day are engaged in excursions, nature and cultural walks, and who returning in the evening need a hot shower and a comfortable bed to face a new day rested. The choice of the en-suite bathroom has in fact necessarily restricted the space a little in a hamlet where it is only possible (and fortunately) to implement a conservative restoration of the rooms without modifying the urban layout.

Synergies between the B&B and Bova's typical eateries (5 restaurants, 1 wine shop/tasting house for local wines, 1 typical take-away rotisserie) and local members of the Aspromonte National Park's Official Guides Association and the Italian GAE (Environmental and Hiking Guides) Association , including the owner's husband Pietro Romeo, make it possible to combine overnight stays with the rediscovery of the ancient enogastronomic flavours of Greek Calabria, as well as the excitement of walking and trekking in a unique natural setting characterised by the torrents of the rivers, Mediterranean maquis and hilly and mountainous habitat.

BREAKFAST

In the B&B, breakfast, in accordance with Regional Law 34/2018, is prepared with packaged commercial food products that, where possible, seek to respond to the logic of zero km food products, also known as short supply chain (local products that are produced/sold nearby) or that of regional production: coffee, tea, chocolate, milk, camomile, herbal teas, cereals, cakes, bread, jams, cheese, eggs, sliced meats, fruit juices, fruit in season. You can also use the breakfast cabinet as needed during the day to make yourself a coffee/tea and keep your own drinks cool (in addition to the minifridges in the rooms).

We live in Bova a delightful medieval hamlet in the province of Reggio Calabria perched on the slopes of the Aspromonte National Park (which entered the Unesco Global Geoparks Network in April 2021), 900 metres above sea level and 15 minutes from the Ionian Sea. Bova is part of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of Italy’, is the ‘Jewel of Italy’ and for the TCI ‘Orange Flag’ and Borgo Americans friendly. The Borgo di Bova, one of the few villages in the Grecanica Area where the elderly still speak the Greek language of Calabria, is located on a natural panoramic terrace from which one can admire the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna in its majesty and grandeur.

The company, through MY EXPERIENCE, proposes ‘real’ and ‘authentic’ experiences, in a village where catering and accommodation are the best way to welcome and make guests feel at home, and nature and cultural excursions/walks in the Aspromonte National Park become unforgettable memories. We take care of organising tourist, cultural and food-and-wine experiences in the Greek Aspromonte, so as to make people love this strip of land that has a millenary history and that has remained ‘sincere’ and still in time, as when it was travelled in the 1800s by Grand Tour travellers including Edward Lear, who recounts it in his ‘Diary of a journey on foot’ where, together with his friend Proby, he travelled on foot and with a mule through the province of Reggio Calabria from 25 July to 5 September 1847. From this diary was born a path that retraces his footsteps and is called ‘The Englishman's Path’ https://sentierodellinglese.wordpress.com/

We also manage two BED & BREAKFAST and one TOURIST FURNISHED APARTMENT, three small extra-hotel structures that offer their guests the possibility of intensely experiencing this exceptional microcosm made up of nature, history, culture, art and food and wine, and of appreciating the Greek Calabrian hospitality and welcome, known as filoxenìa (love for the stranger).

MY EXPERIENCE

MY EXPERIENCE aims to promote experiential tourism in an area that seems to have been made to be told, the millenary cradle of Greek civilisation, inhabited over the centuries also by other great civilisations that have made it a land rich in traditions, rituals, music, food, and a feeling that is that of hospitable hospitality, the PHILOXENIA, matured over the centuries and come down to the present day.

ENOGASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCES range from knowledge to experimentation with ancient local ingredients such as flour, oil, tomatoes, goat and sheep's milk, goat and pork.

Simple products such as flour with which to make maccharuni, typical home-made pasta and cuddhuredde doughnuts, first boiled and then baked

But also zippole, fritters made of flour water and anchovies fried in hot oil.....

..and lestopitte, disks of dough similar to the Greek pita, fried in plenty of oil and then eaten as they are, stuffed with typical local products (capicollo, cheese, peperonata...)

And with the fruits, vegetables, wild herbs, and medicinal herbs, prepare provisions for the winter, such as figs dried in the sun . Knowledge and wisdom at the basis of a simple rural cuisine made with the seasonal products that the land generously offered.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCES seek to understand the history of a community, that of the Greeks of Calabria, which has tenaciously sought to exist and preserve its language and religion. And that, despite having been mortified over the centuries and deprived of its identity, has been able to resist by creating, sometimes unconsciously, cultural syncretisms that have saved it from oblivion and allowed it to hand down unique rites, traditions, music, dances and ancient festivals.

NATURALISTIC EXPERIENCES, walks and trekking in respect of environmental sustainability are enriched by the biodiversity of the Greek Aspromonte, the geosites of the Unesco Geopark, an area made up of mountains and plains, peaks and hills, Mediterranean maquis and torrents in a kaleidoscope of colours, scents and landscapes, where the sky and the sea are never the same from one day to the next... Ancestral energies energise the mind and help us understand how heroic it was to live in these places suspended between sky and sea, and also how difficult it is to part with them.

MY EXPERIENCE for the naturalistic part has Pietro Romeo an excellent storyteller and guide who has loved his territory since he was born there, and is an Official Guide of the Aspromonte National Park and an AIGAE Official Guide.

Aspromonte has been his privileged place of work for 40 years as a forestry worker for Calabria Verde. He discovered it every day, dazzled by its wild beauty, its breathtaking views, its dense woods penetrated only by rays of intense light. He has known its most inaccessible places, met the animals that live there, admired the colours of the flowers that grow there. He has walked its paths, drunk at its crystal-clear springs, eaten its fruits, rested in the shade of its majestic trees.  He planted oaks, cherry trees, chestnut trees, grafted pear trees and wild apple trees so that people and animals could eat its fruit. He cleaned streams, paths, undergrowth, picnic areas....

And once he has retired, he has continued to bring this majestic mountain to life, proposing excursions and nature walks to the guests of Bova's B&Bs, destinations designed and built to meet specific needs, demanding or simple, suitable for trained hikers, but also for those who are not, such as families with children....

He walks and talks about the nature in which he lives, with its ancestral beauty. He tells the story of the Greeks of Calabria and their impervious but accessible land, of the ancient villages located on rocky summits, to protect themselves from enemies from the sea. It explains the unique biodiversity of the Aspromonte Park, the geology that has counted it among the UNESCO Geoparks since 2021, the ancient traditions, music and rituals of the Greeks of Calabria, the cultural identity of a people, closely linked to their habitat with Mount Etna and Pentidattilo on the horizon, who have always lived in peace with their mountain, a source of sustenance and life.
